Olivia Gonzalez spent her #UWSummer in Lunga Lunga, Kenya as an intern at NGO Health by All Means, which works to empower and educate Kenyan women. This internship was coordinated by the #UWMadison International Internship Program and supported by the 4W Initiative. ⠀ ⠀ Olivia is a senior in the UW School of Nursing and a Masters of Public Health student in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. ⠀ ⠀ “Over the past 6 weeks, I received the absolute privilege to intern beside an incredibly strong team of Kenyan women. Together, we worked to improve understanding regarding women’s health, specifically menstruation, and introduce a reusable, washable sanitary pad to over 600 mothers and grandmothers across 13 rural villages. This international internship provided more than a deeper understanding of global public health avenues I want to explore, for it provided a family of hundreds of women who share the drive to improve the future for their daughters, sisters, and themselves. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I found comfort in the uncomfortable and a feeling of home 8,500 miles away.” ⠀ ⠀ We’ll be sharing #UWSummer stories on Instagram from July 29 to Aug. 9.
